Pfftt, Out of The Box?

Pfftt, Out of The Box?

Ergh, I don't usually rant or complain about my life in my journal;
but I think I need your.. thoughts for this kind of cases.

--

Just recently, I was asked to make a giant banner for my friends' science project for a competition. I was excited at first because I always have that kind of excitement when given a designing project. Plus, it gave proof to myself that people actually notice my art and trusting me with their project. Almost like a real client business :dummy:

I worked hard during the past 3-4 days. Why so? Because as 'creative' as I can be, I always try to have a signature style in my designs. I always want to create a uniqueness that can distinct my designs from the others; out of the box kind of design.

In this case, I design a science poster to a fully illustrated design, which include an illustrated conclusion and even the background! I tried to make it as colorful as possible, and as attractive as it can be.

And then my principal came, took one hard look at it, and..
COMPLAINS.
He said my design had TOO MUCH pictures and illustrations. Which is true, because my designs are illustrated things. LOL. But what pisses me off is that he wanted me to reconstruct it and replace the pictures with TEXT. Wall of texts. How old school is that? Or am I wrong? :shrug:

What I'm trying to say from this little story/rant/complain of mine is,
in the world of designers, I know I have to work with these kind of clients. The thing is, I'm really confused right now between thinking with the current flow, or to become overly 'creative' with your own style?

I have always tried to be as 'out of the box' as possible, and until know, that didn't turn out so great. Not only this case, I have experienced much more than this.

I'm currently pissed off because I think us, designers and artists, always try to create something new and fresh to the world. But only few people around us appreciate and recognize what we call as 'great designs'. I know designs are relative, but do we have to keep up with the public's wants? Or do we stand our own opinions about our designs?

LONG RANT, I know. :noes:
Thank you to whoever reads that wall of text above and survives~ :heart:
You deserve a cookie! :cookie:

I rant about this a lot.

In general, people have a bad view on designers because they think they're right or more creative and blah. /GUILTY

I'd say its better to suck it up and redo the banner. Who cares whether your principal likes your style. Not everyone's style is to everyone's liking. So, sometimes, as a designer, you have to break some of your own rules and cater to other people.

I know designers can't cater to everyone (since everyone has a different view to art, srsly), but its better to try than to get angry. Take it as an opportunity to try out different styles that is suitable for the audience and the hdsjkfdh principal.

i hate it when i go through this too.

Yeah, I did rant a lot but I usually don't share my rants with anyone; except for this one I guess :B

I already did redo the banner C: Well, he still didn't really acknowledged my work even after I fixed it, but I'm still proud of my work because almost all people that saw my banner said it was awesome; except for him LOL.

Even if I have to make my designs slightly worse than before, we still have to 'agree' to our audience I guess. At least that's what I learn from all of those experiences. I haven't gone mad yet until now only about the wrongs of my designs; it's just that, well, you know, the feeling of annoyance especially if another person got the credit for a work that you know he/she doesn't deserve :noes:

LOL, hifives! :dummy:

;n; That sucks, it really is off putting when something you work so hard on gets complained about and asked to redo ;A;
But I guess when you're asked to do something, you'll have to consider the genre and audience u__u
Still that's really annoying :iconcryforeverplz: I bet your design was amazing as always, sirry principal just doesn't know what art is :iconbunnehglompplz:

Yes, exactly. Though I think I really should be more mature dealing with these kind of stuff :S
Actually, the audiences are majorly teenagers; since the banner will be displayed in an open exhibition. xDD But yeah, I get your point :nod:

You can be sure I agree 100% on your last sentence :lmao:
Do you wanna see it? :eyes: [link]

Mmm, cookies.

The thing is with science fairs, you need to be as professional as possible. You can make your poster as pretty and eye catching as you want, but you really, really don't want to make it look like a unicorn threw up all over it.

With science fairs, the only thing that the poster is IS a wall of text. You can outline it, and make it as pretty and add as many visual aids as you want, but it has to be walls of text, no matter if you're Picasso or not.

Hmm, I guess you have a point right there. My school always has a Science Fair every year and what I notice is the posters are kinda dull and lengthy. I understand that for schools, our designs have to be slightly boring to be accepted. I guess yesterday I was at the climax of my annoyance because these things happen to me a lot of times; not only for science-y stuff, but for other tasks as well.

For example, I saw one of the 'favorite' posters my teachers like is the one with loads of text, AND lots of nasty drop shadows and gradients. That just got me thinking like 'how come those designs get better reviews than mine?'...:B
